As you artsy Londoners may be aware, the Vault Festival started this week, so you can all look forward to a full six weeks worth of its alternative, fringey delights. It's a truly diverse and enticing programme of events, and one of the shows that caught my eye was 'Fat Man', a modern take on the story of Orpheus.
The show, from producing company Move To Stand, has been written by Martin Bonger, who also performs the play. I spoke to him to find out more about this tragicomic piece. You can read the interview here.

COMEDY: Chatback Comedy w/ Daniel Simonsen | Camden Comedy Club | 30 Jan
This loquacious stand-up night finds Scandinavian sourpuss and TV-son-of-Bob-Mortimer Daniel Simonsen joined by high-energy comedian Felicity Ward, talkative Irishman Andrew Stanley, and the "amiable and laid-back" Sean McLoughlin. COMEDY: The David Elms Experience | The Invisible Dot | 30 Jan (pictured) Highly-tipped and many-talented musical comic David Elms spreads his wings in this, his namesake 'Experience' show at The Invisible Dot. Guests on the night are versatile character comedian Kieran Hodgson, Annie McGrath of non-identical sketch pairing Twins, and stand-up on the um...up, Lolly Adefope. Details and tickets here. MUSIC: Lambchop | Barbican | 30 Jan Long-lived Nashville band Lambchop rewind to 2000, playing their definitive LP of that year, timeless ten track 'Nixon', from start to finish as part of the fifteenth anniversary of its release. As well as their headlining festivities, support act and one-time Cajun Dance Party/Yuck man Daniel Blumberg will play live as his 'unreal' new solo trip, Hebronix. Details and tickets here. |

OPERA/KIDS: Listen To The Silence - A Journey With John Cage | Royal Opera House | until 1 Feb (pictured) Zonzo Compagnie dials up this unique-sounding show for all the family, an interactive experience inspired by composer John Cage's noiseless work '4'33'. In it, children are invited to create their own sonic (and silent) landscapes. Details and tickets here. THEATRE: Joan Of Arc | New Diorama Theatre | until 28 Feb Award-winning youth company The Faction stage this take on Schiller's play of 1801 'The Maid Of Orleans', the tragedy of a woman ready to fight to the death in God's name. THEATRE: TS Eliot's Murder In The Cathedral | Temple Church | until 1 Feb TS Eliot's verse drama based on the historic assassination of Archbishop and "turbulent priest" Thomas Becket, which was written in 1935 in reaction to the rise of fascism, is revived, at a fittingly tense time for religion v politics, in the fittingly godly Temple Church. Director Joe Hamston's spin on the text, which features a pro cast alongside a bunch of moonlighting lawyers. Details and tickets here. |

COMEDY: Comedy Club 4 Kids w/ Danny Buckler + Nick Doody | Soho Theatre | 1 Feb (pictured) Theatrical entertainer Danny Buckler and topical comic Nick Doody provide the LOLs 4 the kids in this toned-down matinee show for all ages, which is MC'd by one of TW London's most favourites; the one, the only, the podcast-starring Tiernan Douieb. FILM: Only Lovers Left Alive / Finding Vivian Maier / A Prophet | Pillow Cinema, Former Shoreditch Underground Station | 1 Feb It's the last day to take advantage of the latest in well-padded film fads, as the team at Pillow Cinema screen (and this isn't a package deal) a nice array of movies, from Tilda Swinton's vampiric 'Only Lovers Left Alive', John Maloof and Charlie Siskel's acclaimed film in search of photographer Vivian Maier, and French prison thriller circa 2009 'A Prophet'. Details and tickets here. FILM: Katharine Hepburn Season | BFI | 1-14 Feb The BFI dedicates an aptly extensive season to the many great cinematic doings of Hollywood iconoclast Katharine Hepburn. It starts, as chronology dictates, with a showing of KH's first film, director George Cukor's 1932 drama 'A Bill Of Divorcement', in which she stars as Sidney, a "sharp, modern girl facing down a complex past". COMEDY: Ten Years On - The Malcolm Hardee Show | Up The Creek | 2 Feb
While Malcolm Hardee, alternative comic anti-icon and the formiddable boss of the Tunnel Club, may have died ten years back; his anarchic legacy still lives on in events like this one, which is going ahead to raise money for an in-development documentary on Hardee by Adamotions. The show features the likes of the all-new Greatest Show On Legs, Bob Slayers, Joz Norris, Jayde Adams, Cheekykita and a liberal sprinkling of secret big names. Details and tickets here. COMEDY: Simon Munnery - Fylm School | Soho Theatre | 2 Feb (pictured) Serial innovator and cinema know-all Simon Munnery acts as host and fylm director as he invites a reel of temping comedians (in this case Phill Jupitus and Brian Gittins) funniest, to play with a camera, projector and screen for a night of live film-based comic schooling. MUSIC: Burrows & Fargion — One Flute Note & Body Not Fit For Purpose | Sadler's Wells, Lilian Baylis Studio | 2-3 Feb Choreographer Jonathan Burrows and composer Matteo Fargion, whose 'thing' is to clash the formality of classical music with an open approach to performance, collaborate on a pair of works; pensive, memory-themed piece 'One Flute Note' and political commission 'Body Not Fit For Purpose'. COMEDY: Susan Calman - Lady Like | Soho Theatre | 3-15 Feb
Scottish shortcake and star of many a BBC radio/TV game show Susan Calman paints a picture of her life as an older, wiser woman and, in the words of her neighbours, "mad cat lady". "If you don’t know who she is'", the story goes. "'Lady Like' will, at the very least, make you feel better about your own life". Details and tickets here. THEATRE: Elephant Man | Jack Studio Theatre | 3-21 Feb The piercing life story of 'horribly deformed' Victorian man Joseph Merrick is adapted by ThisWeek London-profiled company Fourth Monkey, experts in making brave new theatre. Abandoned as a child, the so-named 'Elephant Man', a freak-show attraction and medical marvel, looks at London's high society set and realises it's the world, not him, that's ugly. THEATRE/FILM: The Paper Cinema's Odyssey | Battersea Arts Centre | 3-14 Feb The acclaimed Paper Cinema draw modern meaning from Homer's ancient Greek saga of one man's almighty road home; raging storms, supernatural forces, high seas and all. COMEDY: Lie Back And Think Of England | The Vaults | 4-8 Feb
A fast-pased physical thrill-ride into ultra-shy supply teacher Ms Got Told's surreal 'sex ed' seminar, 'Lie Back...' finds its writer and star Rachel Lincoln using props and flip charts to teach her class about adolescence, contraception and 'the act itself' in suitably awkward style. MUSIC: Luke Haines | Islington Assembly Hall | 4 Feb (pictured) In-your-face punk figurehead Luke Haines, the flighty star of political bands The Auteurs, Baader Meinhof and Black Box Recorder, replays his most recent LP, last year's 'New York In The 70s', as well as earlier sign-offs. THEATRE: The Singing Stones | Arcola Theatre | 4-28 Feb Celebrated playwright/director Kay Adshead is in the driving seat for this triad of short plays, all looking at 2011's Arab Spring from the side of the women involved; from the heroines of Tahrir Square, to Kurdistan's female fighting forces, to a band of quarrelling artists. The Tate hosts a display of works from South African painter Marlene Dumas, who's known for her psychologically-charged style and leanings towards themes of sexuality, love, death and shame. COMEDY: Green Milk Comedy Night w/ Tony Law | The Pipeline | 5 Feb (pictured) This brand-new-as-can-be comedy night, which is based in a basement on Liverpool Street, is headlined by whimsical Canadian wild man Tony Law, and features Wales' Welshest Matt Rees and duffel coat-loving stand-up Harriet Kemsley. Details and tickets here. MUSIC: Unicef Next Generation After-Party w/ Alpines | Village Underground | 5 Feb Children's charity Unicef presents this 'London-themed' event in aid of its Syria Appeal.
